The federal government is spending more than $500 million a year to hire more employees, and some are saying the job is getting harder.
But the job isn’t getting easier.
The federal government has spent nearly $500.1 million on jobs since 2015, a rise of nearly 5,000 jobs, according to data released Thursday by the Office of Personnel Management.
That is a dramatic increase, according a group of former federal workers, including three former deputy chiefs of staff for the federal government, two former assistant secretaries of defence and the federal public affairs office.
Federal jobs are down in recent yearsThe federal economy has shrunk in the last year, but employment in the federal workforce is down sharply. “
If you look at what’s happening in the private sector, in many cases, it’s getting harder and harder to fill those jobs.”
Federal jobs are down in recent yearsThe federal economy has shrunk in the last year, but employment in the federal workforce is down sharply.
There were just a few thousand federal employees in July, down more than 8,000 from a year earlier.
Even with that decline, the federal job market remains the envy of Canada, said Wiebbe, who was deputy chief of staff to then-secretary of state for foreign affairs, John Bolton, from 2012 to 2014.
Federal job growth in the past three years has slowed considerably.
The federal jobless rate has declined from 10.6 per cent in October 2014 to 9.3 per cent now.
It’s a big reason that job losses are more concentrated in the public sector, Wiebel said.
Many of those workers are not directly in the workforce, he said.
In fact, they’re not in any of the government’s jobs that get the most federal government funding.
A lot of those jobs are in the commercial sector, he added.
The Canadian Commercial Association says it’s the most common job for Canadians with disabilities.
The federal Liberals and their federal Conservatives have been touting a massive increase in federal jobs in recent months.
In a recent economic update, the prime minister touted a $2.6-billion, five-year plan to create 5,200 new jobs in the coming years.
The prime minister also announced a $1-billion initiative to hire 100,000 more Canadians with a range of disabilities.
But the federal Liberals have not put much effort into hiring these people.
They’ve spent a lot of time talking about the need for them to be in a position to care for seniors.
But some people say that’s not a priority for the government.
“When you start spending money to do a job like that, you should not only be doing it in a way that is beneficial to the public,” said Michael Wiebes, the former deputy minister of public works.
“But it should also be about what is the right thing to do for the public interest.”
The government is giving a lot more money to provinces than it has to the federal departments, he continued.
When you get money to give to a province, it has a negative impact on their economy, he noted.
I’ve worked for a number of years in the civilian sector.
I’ve had to go back and forth between the government and the provinces.
And the money that I received from Ottawa was not always consistent.
Former federal minister of infrastructure and urban development John Del Grande, who worked in the same role in the late 1990s and early 2000s, said the federal and provincial governments are giving too much money to one sector.
“The government needs to find a way for the private and public sectors to work together in a collaborative way.””
